FAQ - Eating and Drinking
Try Rheinischer Sauerbraten or Himmel un’ Ähd at a brewery.
Or order a Halve Hahn (in english: half a chicken) and be ready for a surprise ;)
Drinks
People in Düsseldorf drink Alt – the local type of beer. People drink Alt standing outside in the midst of winter drinking Altbeer. Even local women do.
Alt is a dark beer served in rather small glasses.
In a typical brewery or pub, be aware of an important detail: an empty (or almost empty) glass is an order for a new one. No discussion. Once the waiter (we call him ‚Köbes’ – or if she`s a women, ‚Köbinchen’) placed the new glass beneath your old one, he won`t take it back. The only way to prevent this is to put your beer mat / coaster on top of your glass.
Another important detail: Never order a Kölsch (Cologne beer) in an Altbier pub. Possible results are unpredictable, but in all cases rather inconvenient: from having the Köbes yelling at you, making fun of you, ignoring you for the rest of the day to being served horrible mixtures of you-don`t-wanna-know…. so just be a good guest, order one Alt and then keep drinking what he serves you.

The Uerige Alt served at Intercontinental Hotel is actually one of the best brews – and being served at the Conference venue. Also recommended: Füchschen & Schlüssel.
Also worthwhile noticing is the Killepitsch Schnaps / hard Liquor with herbs. Have one inside or outside ‚Et Kabüffke’ on the corner Flinger Str / Bergerstr.
A bottle of Killepitsch also makes a nice present. Check www.killepitsch.de
