FAQ - Travelling

By car

To be allowed to drive into the centre of Düsseldorf, cars need to have a sticker called ‘Umweltplakette’. This also applies to cars with foreign registration.

For a map with the borders of the zone check

www.duesseldorf.de/top/thema010/aktuell/news/umweltzone1/index.shtml

The streets that mark the border of the zone may be used by cars without the sticker.

The fine is 40€ and – for Germans – one point at the registry in Flensburg.

Stay tuned for recommended parking outside the forbidden area.

Flights

For inexpensive flights to Düsseldorf do not forget to check Lufthansa – they frequently have offers below 100€ for round trips within Europe – and Düsseldorf is a significant Lufthansa hub.

When travelling via Cologne, Germanwings might be a good alternative. Also Check Air Berlin.

Train

For long distance travel by train, make sure to book your tickets online as soon as possible – train travel in Germany is pretty expensive when compared to other countries – unless you get special offers and book in advance.

There is no need for early booking of tickets from the surrounding airports Düsseldorf, Cologne, Dortmund and Weeze/Düsseldorf-Niederhein (Ryanair) as prices for these ticket are fix.

Public Transportation

A single ride within Düsseldorf ‚Zone A’ is 2,30€. You can get Tickets with 4 rides at 7,70€ - you may share a 4-rides-ticket with several people – just stamp them once for each person.

A ‚Zone A’ ticket is valid for any combination of bus/tram/underground train/suburban train (S-Bahn)/regional express (RE) train/sky train at Düsseldorf airport.

Buy your tickets on the bus, on the tram or at the machine (they accept coins, sometimes bills, sometimes German ‘Geldkarte’ chip cards, sometimes ec-cards, credit cards usually only at train stations) or in certain newspaper shops.

Closest underground train stop is Steinstrasse/Königsallee,

Closest tram stop is Graf-Adolf-Platz.

Closest train station is Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof / central train station

Over the next couple of weeks, we will put information on the website on how to travel from the different airports and Düsseldorf main train station to the venue – we will provide you with detailed information including which trains/trams/buses etc. to take.

Check the web for your personal timetable for all means of public transportation in Germany – trains, busses, trams, metro, busses…:

Taxi

Düsseldorf Taxi: +49-(0)211-33333.

In general, cheating taxi drivers are very rare in Germany. And all taxis in one city are bound to the same tariff which is based on distance. For a longer distance tours you may try to negotiate a lump-sum in advance. You also might want to mention whether you want a fast or a cheap route. The fast route might be a detour around the city or city centre, thus more expensive.

In case you are a group or more than 3-4 people, order a larger ‚Grossraumtaxi’ with more seats rather than two taxis – they might charge a little extra, though. Do NOT take a taxi from any other than the Düsseldorf airport to the venue – it will cost a fortune. And especially in the case of Cologne airport, it will only save you a few minutes in comparison to the train – especially during peak traffic time, which is really heavy in the area.

In case you come with a group of people to an airport other than Düsseldorf, we will be happy to book an airport shuttle for you at your expense.

The basic fee for a taxi ride within Düsseldorf is 5,50 EUR including 2 kilometers and 2 minutes of waiting time. Each additional kilometers are 1,70€ each.

Additional waiting time (also caused by traffic) is 0,45€/minute.

Minivan-surcharge of 3€ when using a large taxi (Großraumtaxe) with more than 4 people.

Prices valid during daytime & nighttime - whether weekday, weekend or public holiday.
